Schools near Antas, Porto: what's a walk, what's a drive
What's reachable on foot for a family in Antas, and what means a short daily drive — named, with the honest map.
Key findings
- 01Externato O Meu Lar (private — creche, preschool and 1.º ciclo / primary) is about 12 m from the parcel on Rua de Costa Cabral; the public Escola Básica do 1.º CEB/JI das Antas covers the same ages about 500 m away
- 02The private Colégio Júlio Dinis (national + Cambridge streams, part of Dukes Education) moved to a new Rua do Porto Feliz campus in 2023 — no longer a walk, but a short drive
- 03Porto's four main international schools — CLIP, the Oporto British School, the Deutsche Schule and the Lycée Français International — cluster in the west of the city (Foz / Boavista), a 15-to-20-minute drive
- 04The honest map: walkable early years in Antas, a short commute for secondary or an international track
Why it matters: Schooling is the question that decides a neighbourhood for a relocating family. In Antas the early years are genuinely walkable; secondary and the international curricula are a short drive — and it is better to know which is which before you sign.
If you are moving to Antas with children, the honest headline is this: the early years are a walk, and most of what comes after is a short drive. A private preschool-and-primary sits at our door; secondary and the international schools are a short drive. A state school for the early years is a few minutes on. From there — secondary, or any of Porto's international curricula — you are reaching for the car keys, not your shoes.
I'm José Luis, and we are building Privilege Gardens in Antas, so read the disclosure at the end. The school map is one of the reasons we chose a calm, residential parcel — and one where I would rather tell you plainly what is on foot and what is not.
What's a walk: the early years
Two schools cover preschool and primary within a short walk of the parcel.
Externato O Meu Lar is about 12 m away, on Rua de Costa Cabral itself — a private school running creche, pré-escolar and the 1.º ciclo (primary, grades 1–4). For a household with a toddler or a primary-age child, that is the school run reduced to a doorstep. The public Escola Básica do 1.º CEB/JI das Antas — part of the Agrupamento de Escolas António Nobre — covers the same ages, preschool and primary, about 500 m away. Between the two, a family can do the whole early-years stretch in Antas without a car.
The school Antas is known for is no longer in Antas
Colégio Júlio Dinis is the name most people attach to schooling here, and it is worth being precise about it. It is a private school running both a Portuguese national stream and a Cambridge international one (IGCSE and A-Levels), and it is part of the Dukes Education group. For decades it occupied premises beside Rua de Costa Cabral. In 2023 — the year it joined Dukes — it moved to a much larger campus at Rua do Porto Feliz. From the parcel it is now an easy, short drive, but it is a drive, not the three-minute walk an older map might promise. I would rather correct that here than let it mislead you.
International schools: a drive to the west
If you want an international curriculum, plan your commute toward the coast. Porto's four established international schools all sit in the west of the city, around Foz and Boavista — a 15-to-20-minute drive from Antas. The table below maps the ones a relocating family usually weighs, including Colégio Júlio Dinis's international stream.
| School | Curriculum | Where in Porto | From Antas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colégio Júlio Dinis (CJD) | Portuguese national + Cambridge (IGCSE, A-Level) | Rua do Porto Feliz (from 2023) | short drive |
| CLIP — Colégio Luso-Internacional | English National Curriculum + IGCSE & A-Levels | Aldoar / Foz (west) | 15–20 min drive |
| Oporto British School | British curriculum + IGCSE + IB Diploma | Foz | 15–20 min drive |
| Deutsche Schule zu Porto | German bilingual, kindergarten to grade 12 | Boavista / Campo Alegre | 15–20 min drive |
| Lycée Français International | French curriculum + Baccalauréat (AEFE network) | Foz / Serralves | 15–20 min drive |
Drive times are off-peak and approximate; the school years and curricula are each school's own published profile. None is walkable from Antas — that is simply where Porto's international schools are.
How the Portuguese system maps to ages
It helps to line the local schools up against the system. Pré-escolar (preschool) is ages 3–6 and optional. Ensino básico is compulsory and runs in three cycles: 1.º ciclo (grades 1–4, ages 6–9), 2.º ciclo (grades 5–6) and 3.º ciclo (grades 7–9). Ensino secundário is grades 10–12, ages 15–18, and schooling is compulsory to eighteen. So the walkable schools in Antas cover the first stretch — preschool and the 1.º ciclo; from the 2.º ciclo onward, a state pupil travels to the rest of the Agrupamento de Escolas António Nobre, and a private or international pupil travels west.
What this means if you're moving with children
The errand-by-errand version of the walkable claim — pharmacy, café, clinic, supermarket and the rest — is measured in living in Antas on foot. And the same calm-versus-coast trade-off, priced out against the seafront, is the subject of Antas or Foz. Schooling is one piece of a larger relocation question — cost of living, language, safety and residency — which we set out in the guide Moving to Portugal: living in Porto.
A note on our interest
We develop in Antas, on Rua de Costa Cabral, so we have an interest in how this reads. That is exactly why the walk-and-drive distances are first-party measurements anyone can re-run, the school facts come from each school's own pages and the public registries, and where the honest answer is "that one's a drive," I have said so plainly.
What schools are within walking distance of Antas?
For the early years, two. Externato O Meu Lar — a private school offering creche, preschool and 1.º ciclo (primary, ages 6–10) — is about 12 m from the Privilege Gardens parcel on Rua de Costa Cabral. The public Escola Básica do 1.º CEB/JI das Antas, covering preschool and primary, is about 500 m away. Secondary schooling and the international schools are a short drive, not a walk.
Is there an international school in Antas?
Not in Antas itself. Porto's four main international schools — CLIP (Colégio Luso-Internacional do Porto), the Oporto British School, the Deutsche Schule zu Porto and the Lycée Français International de Porto — are all in the west of the city, around Foz and Boavista, a 15-to-20-minute drive. The private Colégio Júlio Dinis, which runs a Cambridge international stream, moved to a Rua do Porto Feliz campus in 2023 and is also a short drive.

Ensino secundário is grades 10–12, ages 15–18. Schooling is compulsory to age 18. State schools are grouped into local clusters (agrupamentos de escolas).
Can my child walk to school in Antas?
For preschool and primary, yes — Externato O Meu Lar is at the door and the public Escola Básica das Antas about 500 m. From 2.º ciclo and secondary onward, and for any international curriculum, plan a short drive: the private Colégio Júlio Dinis and the international schools are all a few minutes by car, not on foot.
Where did Colégio Júlio Dinis move to?
Colégio Júlio Dinis (now branded CJD International School) left its old premises near Rua de Costa Cabral in 2023 and moved to a larger campus at Rua do Porto Feliz, in the same year it joined the Dukes Education group. It runs both a Portuguese national stream and a Cambridge international one (IGCSE and A-Levels). From Antas it is a short drive rather than a walk.
